Great Lakes: After Tanzania, Angola experiences its first alternation

This was expected since the victory of the ruling party, the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), in general elections with more than 64% of the votes, on its two main contenders, the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) and the Casa-CE which obtained 24.04% and 8.56% respectively.

It finally happened on 26 September: Joao Lourenço elected President by indirect votes, succeeds President José Eduardo dos Santos as head of the country.

The MPLA, in power since the hard-won independence by Angola from Portugal in 1975, retains power with an absolute majority of the 220 seats of Parliament certainly, but the figure of the President is already new.

Several Heads of State and Government are invited to this ceremony, including Paul Kagame of Rwanda, Russian Vladimir Putin and many others.

As Jakaya Kikwete in Tanzania, Edouardo dos Santos, vacates his Chair in favor of his Dauphin, now former Minister of Foreign Affairs; an alternation in a Great Lakes Region where accumulation of mandates and referendums are rampant.
